Toyota operated its North American headquarters in Torrance from 1967 through 2014, making the city a center for Japanese corporate presence and employment.
Toyota arrived in Torrance in February 1967, opening a headquarters building as the company expanded its foothold in the American market. In 1982, after 25 years of growth, Toyota expanded the Torrance complex into a larger multi-building campus that reflected the scale of its North American operations. During those decades, the company employed thousands of workers at the Torrance facility, becoming one of the largest employers in the South Bay region.
The Torrance headquarters was more than an office: it was the center of Toyota's American strategy, home to executives, engineers, and support staff who shaped the company's presence across North America. The facility hosted research, design work, and the decision-making that guided one of the world's largest automakers through its growth in the American market. That chapter ended in 2014 when the company relocated its primary headquarters to Texas, but the legacy of that 47-year presence remains visible in Torrance's economy and infrastructure.
