Health classes explained
What Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard mean and the factors that place you in each.
Carriers organize pricing by rate class. While names differ slightly, the structure is uniform: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table ratings for elevated risk. Tobacco users occupy a parallel tier at higher cost.
What underwriters look at
Carriers examine build, blood pressure, cholesterol, family heart disease or cancer before age 60, driving history, prescriptions, job, hobbies, and nicotine use. Top class needs clean results across most; Preferred permits slight issues; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like medicated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
Rate yourself honestly: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotes assume your stated class; the carrier verifies it during underwriting. Unsure? Quote multiple classes to compare, then let the application decide. Inflating your health does not reduce the final premium—it just skews the estimate.
Susman Insurance Agency can guide you to carriers with more favorable terms for your specific situation, which often outweighs the advertised rate.
